So it may not even be possible - we're just stuck with a janky, half-baked driver from the dark early Windows 8 era of computing. The package provides the installation files for Dell Touchpad Driver version 19.0.15.6 made by Synaptics. But it seems that Alps has had many, many protocol revisions - meaning that a newer driver may not have backwards compatibility built-in. I had hoped someone may have found themselves in a similar situation and improved the matter themselves by, say, rigging a newer driver to work. But when I switch between computers, that lack of scroll functionality doesn't follow naturally. It's almost as if the driver intercepts touchpad activities and processes them through Python before routing it to the screen.Įventually, I got used to just scrolling using the touchscreen, of all things - like a hybrid between phone and laptop - with the "PS/2 Compatible Mouse" driver installed.

With the drivers installed, the latency between actions on the pad -> reaction on the screen is so severe as to make the thing a complete mess to work with - and the CPU usage is intense along the way. It appears to have an Alps touchpad as well (shrouded under the guise of "Dell Touchpad"), and it's only usable WITHOUT the drivers installed. Here now in 2022 with my Latitude E7440 joining you in the same gripe. And I don't want to be forced to use an external mouse all the time. Also, if it's a lost cause, would swapping to a Linux based OS improve this issue? Or just make it worse? If I had the "pointing stick" or whatever Dell calls the ThinkPad "Track Point" (idk which came first, I'm just much more knowledgeable in ThinkPads then Dell laptops), it would be fine, as I am used to those, but not being able to scroll accurately, especially swap scrolling directions, is infuriating. I haven't found any conclusive answers online, so I figured I'd come here and ask. It was last updated like 5-8 years ago, and does not work well at all with windows 10. The touchpad SUCKS in windows 10, even with the Alps driver installed. It's old, but it still does great for what I need (other than battery life, cuz man this thing needs it's original battery replaced).

"No problem" I thought, as I would just install win10 and call it a day.
